Storyline:
The women of an isolated religious community grapple with reconciling their reality with their faith. Though the backstory, we see a community of women come together to figure out how they might move forward together to build a better world for themselves and their children. Stay and fight or leave. They will not do nothing. 2010. Forced to decide whether to forgive, fight, or leave after realising someone has been abusing them at night, the traumatised mothers, wives, daughters, and sisters of a tight-knit Mennonite colony secretly assemble to vote. But with fear, religious belief, misogyny, and the grave repercussions of rebellion getting in the way of a clear decision, the terrified women find themselves left with no alternative. After all, lengthy discussions require time, the most precious commodity of all. And as tempers flare and tensions boil over, like it or not, the sisterhood will have to take action to make themselves heard.
REVIEW: The film that SHOULD have won the Oscar for Best Film. My 3rd Annual Oscar Snub Award goes to ‘Women Talking’. This is the first Snub Award given to a film that was actually nominated (Best Film) and Won an Oscar (Adapted Screenplay). But the film is so far above the field, that once again, it begs to be asked “what were Academy voters thinking?” This is the only film in recent memory that I wanted to see twice in the same day. Every sentence of the screenplay is poetry – simply amazing work. Thankful the Academy recognized Polley’s inspired and (again) poetic adaption of Miriam Toews’ book.
